How to Spring Clean Your Bedroom

September 10, 20243 min read

The birds are chirping. The sun is shining. The flowers are blooming. Spring is in the air! And that means it's time for some spring cleaning.

The best place to start is with the places you spend the most of your time: your bedroom!

Wondering where to begin? Here are some of our best mattress cleaning tips to help you freshen up in no time.

Break out the vacuum

Over time your mattress can collect dust and other particles, but a good vacuuming will suck them right up. Take all of the sheets off of your bed (and throw them in the wash!) and fasten the upholstery attachment to your vacuum. Then, simply vacuum the top and all of the sides of your bed. If needed, you can use the crevice tool to fish out stuck particles. Experts recommend doing this once every three months.

Get the air circulation flowing

Almost everything benefits from a dose of fresh air-- mattresses included! Airing your mattress out can help get rid of any odors and generally freshen it up. Weather permitting, prop your mattress up outside for some fresh ventilation. If you don't have the space to do so, you can simply open some windows near your mattress to get a similar effect.

Keep it cool

Turn down the temperature in your bedroom (ideally between 65-70 degrees) at night and switch your bedding to more breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or eucalyptus. This will help prevent odors, the growth of dust mites, and the accumulation of sweat stains, meaning there's less to clean next time.

Those weird stains and funky odors? Time to say “buh-bye”!

As time goes on, your mattress can accumulate a variety of stains and odors that make it look and smell, well, dirty! For most stains, mix together hydrogen peroxide, a gentle liquid soap and baking soda, and then apply that mixture to the discolored spots on your mattress. Leave it there for about an hour, and then wipe it up with a clean wet cloth.

Switch out your bedding

Don’t forget your linens! As life gets busy, it’s easy to forget to tend to your bedding. But let’s get real: Do your pillows have a musky odor? How old are your sheets? Do they have holes in them? Do you know what that weird stain in the corner is? If you find that you’re not liking the answers to those questions, refresh your bedding! At Sleep First we have a great collection of bedding waiting for you.

With these tricks, your sleeping situation will be fresher than a spring flower! However, if you’re finding that your mattress is simply too old, stained beyond repair, or just plain uncomfortable, it might be time to upgrade.

With a less-than ideal mattress, your sleep, overall health, and quality of life are likely not going to be as good as they could be. It's important to check in with the state of your mattress on a regular basis to see if it's supporting you, or working against you. If you’re finding that you’re just not comfortable anymore, or are not getting the best sleep you can, it might be time to reevaluate. If you find that you do need a new mattress, visit one of  Sleep First’s  locations, where our sleep experts will be glad to talk through your needs and guide you towards the best mattress for you!
