Find yourself asking, "do I need a new mattress"? Here's your answer!

First, how long do mattresses usually last? Is it true you grow into them and they get better with time? Some things like fine wine and your favorite pair of blue jeans just keep getting better with age. Your mattress is not one of those things. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Generally speaking, a good mattress will last you about 7-10 years before it begins to show signs of wear-and-tear. And once that happens, well...you need a new mattress!

Sleeping on an old, worn out mattress will likely lead to tossing and turning, causing muscle aches, back pain and eventual sleep deprivation. When those suffer, your entire health gets thrown off. Clearly, keeping your mattress up-to-date is pretty important. So how do you know your mattress is nearing the end of it’s time?

4 signs it’s time to replace your mattress

You don’t remember when you bought your mattress

Even with good care, most mattresses are only built to last 7-10 years. If it’s been that long since you last updated your mattress, or if you can’t even remember how long it’s been, you’re probably ready to move on to a new mattress.

The general rule of thumb is to replace it every 8 years, and following that ensures that you’re receiving the best support possible. If that isn’t convincing enough, consider this: mattress technology is improving all the time. That means if it’s been a few years since you last shopped, there are now many more options available for you to choose from, making it easier than ever to find a mattress that fully supports all of your individual preferences and needs.

You wake up with aches and pains

Though so many of us experience it, waking up with aches, pains, stiffness, sore muscles, or numbness isn't normal, and can be downright dangerous. If you're waking up in physical discomfort, or feeling groggy and tired even after a full night of sleep, it’s likely time to replace your mattress.

    You’ve changed in some way

It’s likely that either your body or your circumstances have changed in some way since you first bought your mattress. Whether you’ve put on a few pounds or added another person to your bed, your needs are simply different than they were when you chose your current mattress. In order to get the comfort and sleep you deserve, it might be time to change your mattress, too.

    Your mattress looks old

This one might seem a little obvious, but many of us tend to miss it, since our mattress is almost always covered in sheets, blankets and pillows. Does your mattress have any visible lumps or bumps? Are there obvious indents or sagging spots? Is it turning yellow or covered in any stubborn stains? Does it smell dusty or musty? These are all signs that your mattress is ready for an upgrade.

If your mattress is past its prime, your sleep, health, and general quality of life are likely to suffer. It's important to check in with the state of your mattress regularly to see if it's working with you, or working against you. Don’t avoid the signs, or else you could be setting yourself up for more issues later on.
